**tropes: grumpy sunshine, cowboy romance, second chance romance, Beauty and the Beast vibes, groveling trope, family saga, small town romance – enjoy!

He’s been accused of being far too blunt. Like that time he accused her of stealing her company from her best friend… Can Travis and Shayla overcome their differences and find a happily-ever-after together?

Travis Cooper is the youngest son in a family stuffed with loud opinions and ginger-haired powerhouses. Yes, he has a loud bark too. He has to in order to get the ten thousand dairy cows he’s responsible for to listen to him.

But when he happens upon Shayla Nelson stranded on the side of the road, he probably doesn’t need to tell her A – that he used to date her best friend, and B – that Shayla stole her successful outdoor outfitters company from that best friend.

Besides the fact that it’s not true, Travis should know better. And he does, honestly. He was just flustered that his most recent girlfriend had broken up with him only the day before.

Shayla not only didn’t steal the company from her former best friend, she’s worked hard to mend the bridges between her and everyone that had gotten hurt in that tangled mess. When she runs into Travis again a few months later, there’s still plenty of sparks flying between them.

This time, though, it’s the romantic kind and not the accusatory type. When he asks her to be his date to the annual Fall Ball in Sweet Water Falls, Shayla finds herself wanting to say yes to the handsome cowboy.

He’s never had a relationship for longer than a couple of months. She won’t be able to put up with his attitude for long, but can Shayla tame the cross cowboy and capture his heart, or will she have to cut Travis loose the way every other woman has?

Shay and Travis have a very interesting story. I enjoyed the fact that Travis is very mindful of thinking before speaking. He knew he had a problem with this and was willing to change when he met Shay. This is a very interesting and inspiring story. Looking forward to the next book. The Cooper family are exciting people.

  2. Marianne K.

This is a sweet grumpy cowboy romance.. I liked it very much.. It is witty and emotional, with lovely characters..I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

  3. LoisB

All families are different and that’s a good thing. Travis’ and Shay’s families and their reactions to difficulties are totally different. Learning to be willing to change your reactions can lead to wonderful and blessed outcomes.

  4. Barbara W

I loved this story! I saw so many characters from some of the other books. It was like a homecoming. I did feel sorry for both Travis and Shayla with all the problems of having time together. I loved how they got back together. I give Travis lots of points on how he cared so well for his Mother. I wanted to laugh at how disgruntled the brothers (all of them) could get over just about anything!

  5. Sharon S

Travis works in the milking side of the family farm. Some days the sound of cows just sets his nerves on edge. He hasn’t had a regular girlfriend for a long time.Shayla owns Sweetspot which is outdoor outfitters business. She hasn’t dated for years. Their first meeting did not go well, the second wasn’t much better, so when Travis asked Shayla to the Fall Ball, she was shocked! Both have a history of not dating for long. Can this relationship be different? Berthas and Bovine!*I received this book for free for my unbiased review.

  6. patricia rose

travis is the youngest of the brothers and he is in charge of milking the cows. shayla runs an outdoor fitters shop. the longest he has dated any one is 2 months but his blunt way of talking they may or may not make it to the 2 months even. if you like cowboys and romance you will want to read this story i was given a copy but this is an honest review

  7. jcrew

A wonderful story! Loved the banter in the family. Underneath all that stuff are people who really care about family.

  8. BookloverK

Travis’s family is loud hard working people. Shay is working hard to make her business grow and she feels out of her element with Travis’s family. But they have a relationship that is coming together if they can just communicate.

  9. SL K(The Flipped Page)

Romance, sweet, contemporary, western; series but stand alone readTravis and Shayla’s story was a lovely sweet, western small town romance. The dairy and town settings merged together sweetly and loved seeing the growth between the two characters as they worked, dated, got to know each other, and worked through their moments of miscommunication, and their weaknesses and worries to become a lovely couple. Travis’ loud family, the dynamics there, and Shayla’s past history and connection to Travis’ former girlfriend, the family support from Travis’ family, and all of the small moments that built their relationship as a couple, helped them get to know one another, and open their hurting hearts to each other to build a lovely relationship. Perfect small town, farm/ranch and family romance. Can’t wait to read the others that will come in this series. EJ writes these novels so well.I received an ARC from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review, my opinion is my own.

  10. di115

I really enjoyed Travis and Shayla’s story. I loved how the author put the title of the book into the story. Travis and his brothers are loud and love to argue. But now Travis wants to change things and keep a woman for more than two months. It was fun to see how he would be with Shayla, you have to laugh at his first step to asking her out. This was a fun read and I cannot wait for Will’s story. I received an arc and the views and opinions are my own.

  11. Linda A W

I think the Cooper family would drive me crazy! LOL Anything Elana Johnson writes is great! I recommend this if you like loud and crazy, but, wonderful people! I was given this book for my honest review!

This was a very entertaining read. Can’t wait to read more of this series. I got a copy of the book. And am voluntarily leaving my review.

  13. A Mom

This book about Travis and Shayla was a good one. I liked the way the story developed and how Travis got out of his own way and gave Shayla a chance, even though he had preconceived notions about her. I also enjoyed the chapters that prepare us for the next book in the series, Grumpy Cowboy. Great read!

  14. Emilie Davis

You will enjoy this love story from the beginning to the end. The characters are interesting and the interaction of family and friends will be a delight!

  15. Renee

Travis and Shayla had a rocky encounter awhile back that didn’t go well. When they run into each again, sparks are flying. Loved how he asked her out – funny. He came across as grumpy and not very tactful but he so wanted to be different with Shayla. They both work tons and their jobs are very important to each other. Really sweet of course there is angst but in the end these two make the perfect couple.

  16. buzymomof2

This story will pull you in and keep your attention from the start. The characters are fun to get to know, realistic and engaging. The story is well written, flows smoothly from page to page and is 100% enjoyable. Can’t wait for the next book!I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

  17. BradTL3

I loved this small town romance. A wonderful, uplifting read about moving forward, letting go of the past and being loved so completely it takes your breath away. The writing draws you in and keeps you involved throughout the whole story. Shayla & Travis’ chemistry is magical. This story is filled with dreams, hope and amazing characters. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

  18. Tristan RowLee

A great story about a man with no filter who needs to learn that blunt is not always the best, and a workaholic woman who needs to remember that she can’t burn every bridge or soon enough she will be all alone with no one to care. Relationships take work, and both Travis and Shayla have work ahead of them to see if they can turn the sparks that fly between them into a steady fire to live by. This is a clean, sweet read and the first in a new series. I can’t wait for the next book to come out!*I received a free copy of this book to review. All opinions are my own.

  19. Kindle Customer

Farm , boots, hats, crooked sexy grin, kisses to knock you off your feet…what more can you ask for! Family drama is a given and love is all you need!

  20. MaryEllen

This is my voluntary review of a copy I received from Booksprout.co.Great characters. Great story.Yeah, the Cooper family is loud and all up in each other’s business… and they work long hours year ’round.Shayla is practically married to her job. She has help, but in the end it’s her name is on her products. The buck stops with her.All their past relationships have ended because they were to involved with their respective businesses.Funny, that they are willing to take time off to see each other… But their romance will never work… history and all that…

  21. Niki T

This a true enemies to lovers romance, he rescued her and her dog form the side of the road only to “attack” her about how she got her company. When they have a run in a few months later, he can not stop thinking about her, They are both married to their jobs, but can they make time to find happiness?I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

  22. M.K.

Cross Cowboy is an entertaining read that will suck you in the story and make you feel like you are there. The Coopers have 3 sons that are single. They’re like Snow White’s dwarfs. Grumpy, Grumpier, Grumpiest. They are loud and say what they think without a filter. The youngest son, Travis met Shayla Nelson, owner of Sweetspot, the outdoor supply store newly opened in Sweet Water Falls. They have a run in at the feed store and when she comes back out he has left a note on her windshield. They start texting and talking and start dating. Since Travis met her several months ago on the side of the road and drove her to town, he left a bitter taste in her mouth about Kylie, her previous friend and co-owner of Sweetspot. Travis had dated Kylie and just before she packed up and left town she said Shayla stole Sweetspot from her. Travis wanted the story from Shayla as to what happened this time.Travis dates lasted approximately 2 months at best. He decided this time he is going to think before he spoke and take it slow. He even told Shayla to call him out if he got cross with her. They were a good couple as he was a farmer, milked cows 4 shifts a day. She being the owner of Sweetspot she worked sometimes late or had emergencies come up. They make a way to try to see if they could see each other each day if only for a short time. The holidays are coming up and when they go to her parent’s Halloween party they run into her last boyfriend that tells Travis he will be an ex boyfriend soon like him. Now Travis is concerned about what he is talking about and Shayla doesn’t want to talk about it. Their relationship after that takes a sharp hit and Travis cannot understand why. Well he almost made it to 3 months. . . . . . .

  23. Phyl

If the following books in this series are as good as this one I will be thrilled! If you’re looking for something that offers entertaining characters, clean romance, and interesting storylines this is a book for you.

  24. Summer Slater

Amazing book wonderful story can’t wait to read the next one. Love the characters and character introduction in book one

  25. J Marion

This is book one in the Cooper Brothers series. The Cooper family is red headed and outspoken. They can be blunt, but they love each other. The family owns a large farm. This is Travis’ story. Travis is the youngest son. He is in charge of the dairy portion of the farm. He doesn’t date much because his date will always tell him that he’s too blunt and works too much.He invites Shayla to the fall ball. Shayla and her best friend/business partner split 4 years ago and she’s been trying to run her business on her own. She works a lot of hours too.Travis has to learn to be considerate and not so blunt. Shayla needs to decide if she is married to her job or if she wants to date Travis.Really enjoyed this book!

  26. M4G8

This is another great story from Elana Johnson. We met this couple in a previous book so I knew what the characters were like, that it was not a love at first sight book. Travis is a very busy man with a lot of responsibilities and carries that weight. He comes from a family of loud people, they argue because they are passionate. Shayla is very busy with her own business and carries a lot of personal burdens as well. The story unfolds for both characters with give and take along the way. The story is their journey on acceptance, strength and love to find their happy ever after. It is well written and I love the characters for being real. The issues are real the way they deal with them are real and the love they find is real. Wonderfully written and I enjoyed every chapter.

  27. JESSICA J. SANDERSON

Love this start to a new trilogy by Elana! Cross is a bit of an understatement when it refers to Travis but I loved how Shay tamed that crossness. Well for the most part. Bring on book 2!

  28. Katie

I enjoyed this charming story. The characters were witty and had great chemistry. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

  29. Mindy Clayton

I really enjoyed this first story about Clarissa’s brothers. Travis is not the easiest cowboy to get to know or love and it takes just the right girl to soften him up. Enter Shay. I enjoyed watching them navigate their relationship while making mistakes and learning to stay and forgive. I’m looking forward to seeing the other grumpy Cooper brothers being softened up.

  30. Alaska reader

The introduces the family & begins with the youngest brother, Travis. It includes bits\chapters of the 2 brothers & ends with an intro to the oldest sister.Travis is cross, blunt & grumpy. In the story he begins trying to change\improve.Shay is a business owner & works full-time. As the story develops she gets a clearer understanding of family & relationships.

  31. Linda Hillman

Great characters, wonderful plot and I am looking forward to Grumpy Cowboy.

  32. Kenni J Fewin

I love Travis and Shayla! They both recognize their bad habits that have cost them relationships in the past and are determined to do/be better this time! But old habits are hard to break—-but it’s worth it.

  33. Kindle Customer

Travis and his family are a great bunch but tough on attitude for sure! They’ve got so much love for each other though. Shay is a runner in every sense of the word and I’m not sure they can work it out but i loved this book so much!

  34. Tracy Fritts

Cross Cowboy is a heartfelt and heartwarming story. I thought Shayla and Travis was made for each other. They had good chemistry. I thought is was a well written story. I loved the storyline. It’s a page turn. Had my insterst all through the story. I look forward to reading the next book.

  35. gaums1969

Another one hit out of the park. Nothing like a sweet romance to make the world feel right. I want to move to Sweat Water Falls.

  36. Topmom52

Fun story that introduces us to the Cooper family, loud but loving. Both Travis and Shayla are very committed to their work and spend a lot of time dedicated to it. Nice, clean romance. I enjoyed reading this one.I received a free copy of this book and this is my voluntary, honest review.

  37. Kindle Customer

Travis track record with women wasn’t very good. But when he met Shayla for the second time he knew she was the one. What he didn’t know was how hard she was going to make him work to get her. It is well worth reading this delightful book.

  38. Kindle Customer

Entertaining read. Great character development. Story kept me interested and entertained. Will definitely read the next book in the series.

  39. Shrtip

Travis Cooper is a hard working cowboy . He works on the family farm and never dates or takes days off. Shayla has her on business and works all the time. They meet at the coop in town trying to get out of the parking lot. This is a clean well written story of a family that helps each other. I loved the story and characters. I received an arc of this book and I highly recommend reading this book.

  40. DGL

Great story, believable characters, charming setting. Everything you want in a great HEA story. Johnson brings this new series to life with a great beginning. Can’t wait for the brothers to find their special someone, maybe sister Cherry, too?

  41. J Archibald

It was great to read as Travis and Shayla worked on improving themselves and helping their relationship grow, it was interesting to read as the “Cross Cowboy” became a little less cross. And I loved catching up with an old friend, Spencer.

  42. Michell Carey

Enjoyed this book so much. Can’t wait to see what happens in the next book for the Cooper family and the women that come into their lives.

  43. MJ

I’ve really enjoyed getting to know the characters of Sweet Water Falls and the Coopers. I loved Travis and Shay’s story. Elana writes books with families and towns that you want to become a part of. I can’t wait to read more about the Coopers.

  44. Ashton01

This is the story of two people who are totally dedicated to their jobs trying to make things work. It is funny and frustrating and sweet and swoony.Travis is blunt, loud and demanding. Shayla is driven, confident in business but uncomfortable in family situations. It’s great to see how these two bend to get along and get to know each other. What an awesome story and start to a new series!

  45. Kumotteiru

Travis is responsible of all the cows of the family ranch and does a good job, but he is not doing so well in the love department. When he meets Shayla again after having accused her of stealing her shop away from her best friend and partner. For some reason he cannot forget her. Meeting her again and again, intensifies his feelings, but he has a difficult time to bring Shayla to see him in a different light.A nice, clean story, a good storyline, whell-written and engaging.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

  46. Sour

I enjoyed this book very much! I can relate to Shayla’s need to run. Travis’s fractious family is also very familiar to me! This is a wonderful, sweet, clean romance set it in a small town with a fun, warm cast of characters. I can’t wait to see who in the family comes next in the series.

  47. M. Kittles

The only thing that could’ve made this better was maybe a tighter focus on the particular MCs. I want to know about the other characters…just not in this story. I will keep reading the series as I’m able because I enjoy this author’s work. This story will probably end up as maybe my third favorite in the series, but we’ll see. I had a bit of trouble relating to the heroine, though she and the other characters did come across as people who could actually exist. The hero was much easier to relate to with his particular struggle with temper and speaking his mind. He was sweet, though. If you enjoy sweet, clean, contemporary romance with a dash of faith then try this book.

  48. Diane

Travis is a part of the family dairy business and is responsible for the milking of thousands of cows every day. Shayla owns her own outdoor outfitters company that she has built from nothing. Their work and dedication to that work makes it hard for them to find time for each other. Both of them have families with huge personalities. Can they change their priorities to have a relationship with each other? Don’t miss this latest clean romance from Elana Johnson. You will be able to catch up with Spencer and Clarissa from Risky Cowboy and meet the Cooper brothers that makeup this new series. You will love it!

  49. Becky Nokes

A sweet story. Shay and Travis feel like a real relationship and not just a story in a book. Their thoughts and emotions make them very relatable.

  50. Sandy H

I had an Advance Readers Copy of this book, but this is my voluntary and honest opinion. This new series by Elana Johnson, has a great start with this book. I enjoyed the family interactions and the situations presented. Travis and Shayla both have trust issues in themselves and others. Both have cut and run in the past when relationships got hard. I would definitely recommend reading this book.

  51. Kindle Customer

Easy read well structured…and good unexpected turning points. Love how with this story we meet and prepare for the next one.

  52. Kindle Customer

I enjoyed this book and their HEA. Family drama is always some factor in life changes and I liked th he fact that both characters recognized and worked for changes they needed to make to reach the ending they wanted.

  53. VVV

Travis grew up in a family of people who loudly and freely asserted their opinions and rarely worried about the fallout–but nobody stayed mad for long because despite their flaws, they loved one another. The only problem was that when trying to date people who came from different family cultures, their way of speaking was often offensive and made it hard to hold onto relationships for very long. Travis had never had a relationship last more than two months and when he met Shayla, he was determined to try to do things differently because he wanted to hold on to her. This was a story about how two people from two different backgrounds interpret things through their different grids and how it is possible to learn to see things through another person’s eyes and understand one another. I liked Travis because I’ve learned that in a conflict, I prefer to have someone be honest (tactfully and gently if possible) than try to read their mind and guess at why they are acting unhappy. Travis was a genuine and good man; he just needed to work on his presentation. I enjoyed this story and recommend it! I received an ARC from the author and this is voluntary review is my honest opinion.

  54. Diana

Two people who are both extremely busy professionally try to make time for each other. One is a cowboy on a huge dairy farm and the other is a business owner. They have their ups and downs along the way.

  55. Michaela

I really liked this book in the series and am super excited for more. I like this family and ranch.I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

  56. Trudy E. Dapprich

Love this story about Travis and Shayla. Sharla originally didn’t like him because he accused her of steeling his ex girlfriend’s company. But she couldn’t deny the sparks that fly when they are in the same room. So he leaves a note on her truck and invites her to the Fall Ball. She decides he needs to pass a test first before she spends money on a dress and shoes. Travis and his family is loud and opinionated, but Shayla loves being around them. The one problem they have is they both work a lot, and it is hard to find time to spend together. A great story!

  57. Elaine Kiefer

This was a great story. Travis Cooper’s whole life is his family’s dairy farm and he wants more, like a wife and family. His problem is that he is blunt and says whatever comes to his mind before he thinks. When he meets Shayla sparks fly and he tries to change his ways to be more likeable. Both of them work long hours and find it hard to have a relationship plus family issues cause complications. They each have to decide what they want and how much they are willing to work for it. A great story of the love and support of family. I can’t wait to read Will’s story.

  58. Kindle Customer

Loved Travis and Shay’s story. Can’t wait to read the rest of the series. Thank you for the good clean cowboy love stories.

  59. Kylene Roberts

I was given this book as an advanced read. I always look forward to Elana Johnson’s book because they never disappoint. I loved the interaction of Travis and Shay and all the family dynamics that go with it. I love how the characters from other books are interwoven in this book. There is not I dislike about this book and will most likely read it again. I highly recommend this book.

  60. love4paws

Sweet romance. Loved the Cooper family and the bickering they did.I’ll recommend this to my friend that likes Debbie Macomber books.m

  61. Peggy

I just loved the family dynamics and the love of family. The family love was evident in all their interactions

  62. Wandi

I enjoyed just taking my time in reading this book. I liked the family settings and dynamics, which most families experience. This author brings out the characters at their best. People are happy being themselves. Sharing thoughts, being together, trusting in one another seems to highlight this interesting story.

  63. Susan M Jalosky

I really enjoyed this book! Maybe because it’s about characters that have lived a little more of their life before settling down. It gives hope that not everyone has to settle down and get married right out of the gate. The characters each have unique persona that needs a little of the opposite person to give them hope. I couldn’t put the book down once I started it and can’t wait for the next book!! I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.

This is a clean, fun read book 1 about Travis Cooper (who has an awesome, realistic family) and Shayla Nelson (she owns an outdoor supply store), they both are workaholics. The Cooper family has 3 brothers and all seem grumpy. This is a clean sort of love story where there are tempers going, stubborness and opininated family members. There were a few boring moments in this book but for the most part it seemed like a typical family. As the book goes along it keeps you on the edge of your seat. You see and feel the emotions of the characters. I enjoyed it but will not spoil if Travis and Shayla can overcome their struggles and have a happily ever after…you’ll have to read to see.

It seemed to get off to a slow start for me, but when it picked up – Wow! I was blown away when the relationship got sticky for Travis and Shayla. The feelings I experienced when they ‘broke up’ brought tears and anguish to me personally. If one has gone through that type of love, your heart also breaks for these two. Super job, Elana!

I enjoyed the book every but as much, if not more than every book this author writes! Cowboy Western Romance is my favorite and this story didn’t disappoint. Shayla and Travis are a great couple, however, Travis definitely has an attitude problem and Shayla will have to find ways to deal with it while her heart wants more.
