    Second Chance Story

Dave and Brooklynn dated in high school and then he joined the Coast Guard. Now it’s 20 years later and he’s come back to Hawthorne Harbor as a Captain in the Coast Guard stationed close by. Brooklynn lost her husband 3 years ago due to an accident while he was parasailing. Ever since that accident, Brooklynn has closed herself off from relationships and is afraid of water. Dave has been asking Brooklynn to go on a date and she’s refused. When he volunteers on the Spring Fling in order to be close to her, she says she’ll go on a date if he puts himself up on the Bachelor auction. They start dating and getting closer. In order for Brooklynn to get past her fears, she gets counseling but it’s not enough to overcome her fears yet when Dave has to go out in a storm to rescue people. Will they give up on their relationship or continue giving their romance a second chance. This is a clean, sweet romance and I enjoyed it a lot. I received an advanced copy to read first and now have bought my own copy. I like that the couple are a little older – close to 40 and it brings more life experiences to the story.

Brooklyn and Dave: Finally true love

Dave is Captain of a Coast Guard ship and has loved Brooklyn since they met in high school. There’s only one big problem: Brooklyn lost her husband three years ago from an accident on the ocean, so she is petrified of losing Dave when he is on his ship. Their relationship is on-again and off-again because of her fear. I loved the way they work together to find a solution that will result in finally staying together.

Clean romance with a wonderful HEA! I definitely recommend this story!

All I could think of when I saw the cover of The Captain’s Second Chance was YUMMMM!!! Elana has written a sweet, clean second chance romance about Dave, a captain in the Coast Guard and Brooklynn, the woman he has loved from afar for more than 20 years. There are so many parts of this story that I liked… family ties, friends, dogs, the ocean and even learning a little about the Coast Guard and some of their duties. But most of all I loved reading about the growing love between Brooklynn and Dave and how they overcame various obstacles, and in Brooklynn’s case…fear of the ocean… to get to their Happy-Ever-After. This will definitely be a story I’ll read again.

Most 2nd chance’s come with baggage.

Trent & Lauren’s story. Love that we keep getting glances of past characters. This love story, as many go when it’s a 2nd chance, comes with baggage. They both have some to deal with.Classic “don’t tell me how to raise MY kid” and having to remember this isn’t the person that treated you poorly. Hurt feelings and so on.This Author really does stick to real life, it really could happen, in her stories. This is one of her better storylines.Even though it was an ARC read. The story moved smoothly and kept me wanting to read the next chapter. And thank you very much there is a nice ending 🙂

    A clean romance

It’s hard for anyone to love someone and not tell them for years but Adam did. It was time for Adam to find out if Janey could fall in love with him after all them years. It is a very good second chance story and I liked the characters.I received a free copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving this review.

Let the past be in the past where it belongs.

This book brought to mind how long I let the past form my relationships and my life. One day I made the choice to say no more and let the past go just like Hunter and Alice did. I loved the characters in this book and how real to everyday life they were. Family dynamics played such a big roll in this story and proved that it never hurts to say I was so wrong. Very impactful!

The characters are so well done. Brooklynn is so brave and so self-aware. She understands that some of her fears are irrational and so seeks help to deal with them.Dave is so patient with her even when her family isn’t…. He’s often frustrated by her mood changes, but works to control his reactions to them, because he knows she’s working on it.This story was a satisfying start to HEA. Love second chances!

Trent is tired of set up dates. Lauren asked him out 4 years ago but he doesn’t remember her. But he sees her now and likes what he sees. Then she says she doesn’t like kids and he has a son. Her last relationship was abusive and she will never be in that position again. Can they get past their pasts to find a future together? Loved the way they worked through their bumps in the road!

She is back after being left at the altar and swearing off all men and working towards getting her life back together. Could they work through their differences to work together on a project, her as a artist and he as a master woodworker to get a remodel completed on time.

Great story of life and K-9 dogs….

This Hawthorne Harbor series has had my attention from the first book. Then I opened this book and by the second page, I was laughing and knew I had another great read. When a gal accepts a “date” with Trent and then gets a call during the “date” from her boyfriend, for some reason that struck me and I laughed. Then this K-9 training man calls for a contractor to build a deck for him and who shows up, a woman named Lauren Michaels and he wonders where he went wrong in the world. Thinking Michaels was a man made me think of the world today when powerful women are making a stand in the world and can accomplish anything. This is a wonderful read and I loved it from the first page. I would love to live in this community where everyone cares, life is exciting and family life is good.

    The Paramedic’s Second Chance

If you like your romances sweet and clean, then this one is for you. Ms. Johnson did a wonderful job of delivering a solid story. Gretchen Samuels moved back to Hawthorn Harbor with her young daughter, Dixie, after her husband’s death. She always felt with Hawthorn Harbor was home. She would visit her grandparents here every summer and play in the lavender field with the neighbor’s son, Andrew Herrin. Ten years earlier, Drew, now a paramedic, helped to deliver, Gretchen’s daughter on the side of the road. Drew comes to Gretchen’s aid for a second time when she has a flat tire and needs to get to town to deliver her flowers! The road to Gretchen and Andrew’s HEA is a precious story. It is filled with some profound sentiments and words as well as laughter and tears.I adored the dual POV. There were a few moments with that really helped me to connect to the character at a given situation. This is a wonderful start to the series and I look for more. There was a hint at the end as to the next story so I really look forward to it.If you love your romance to be sweet and clean or really just a good feel-good romance, then you should give this one a try. I highly recommend this story to anyone.

    Second Chances

A story of hope, promises, and romance. A feel good story of second chances for a widower, a child that has lost his mother, and a woman trying to gain her self worth back after an abusive relationship to where she can have a chance at real love for the first time. Add in 4 German shepherds, a Christmas get together with unexpected excitement and a certain glass of water. A great Christmas story full of drama, and one that definitely is worth being put on your to read list.

    New Beginnings

After delivering Gretchen’s baby on an emergency call she leaves town. Her grandfather sells his lavender farm, but she moves back as this is the only place she can imagine making a home and living for her daughter and herself as florist doing something she loves. Following a breakup with his girlfriend Drew leaves town for a time. Eventually returning home as he just wasn’t happy in Medina he runs into Gretchen again, this time on the side of the road with a flat tire. In the meantime her husband had been killed in an accident. Establishing a relationship was not something either was sure they wanted. But neither seemed to know what they wanted. An accident causes both to search what the next step would be. Great reading.

And then Drew came into her life again…

I really loved this book. It’s a clean read that can be enjoyed by anyone. I smiled; I laughed out loud; and, I loved the tangled web of love. Gretchen first met Andrew Herrin along side a road; the second time she saw him she had a flat tire on the same road but, ten years later. New in her life was Dixie and her loving husband, Aaron, was no longer with her. Sad, eventful and complicated, to say the least. I enjoyed my walks in the lavender fields and I loved her flowers. This book is about family, dedication and heartfelt caring of those you love. Perfect!

Somebody reviewed that they had been reading some “heavy material” then found this series and loved the break from that. I read through 3-5 books a week and sorry to say usually never take time to review…I plan to get better on that! Anyways that statement really hit a mark with me. I’ve been reading through Elana’s books as fast as I can because they have trully brought some peace, joy, and respite from all the craziness that is in the media. I’ve loved ALL the story lines and my only complaint is when a series ends!!!!!

They were living there when her daughter was born on the side of the road delivered by a paramedic when they couldn’t get to the hospital in time. Eleven years later the same paramedic stops to help her when she has a flat tire. Drew is attracted to her and wants to get to know her better. He makes a habit of being there to help her and gradually their attraction grows. Their relationship grows slowly and I like that aspect of the story.Drew’s folks take Gretchen and Dixie in when she breaks her foot and make them a part of their lives. They both have trouble understanding and expressing their feelings. Since their relationship is a little uncertain when an old flame of Drew’s trys to come between them things blow up.Drew is such a sweetheart in taking care of both Gretchen and Dixie I just had to fall in love with him too. Thinking of a new beginning was difficult for Gretchen because it had been just her and Dixie for so long. Her sole interest had been being a good mother. Their happy ending was sweet. Dixie is quite a character and a little bit of an instigator.

I loved this story of Lauren who had been in a relationship with someone who was abusive and Trent whose wife was killed in an accident and who has a young son to think about. Both had trust issues and you get a chance to see the struggles that they go through, the ups and downs of learning to trust and love again.

There are times when we need to graciously accept help.

This is a beautiful story of reconnecting with a childhood friend. When Gretchen’s husband dies in an accident, she and her daughter Dixie move back to the farming community where she spent summers with her grandfather on his lavender farm. There she reconnectes with Drew, a paramedic who comes across her van stranded on the side of the road with a flat tire. She doesn’t want to admit that she needs help but finally allows him to deliver her, her daughter and the load of fresh flowers she has to her flower shop in town. Then he repaired her flat and drives the van to her shop. This is just the beginning of a beautiful romance with many ups and downs. I was totally engrossed in this story and recommend it as a delightful read.

I love Elana’s books and I’m reading this series in order so it flows as characters meld.Trent is a K9 trainer and police officer. He’s mentioned in the previous books. Lauren is a carpenter and is mentioned before also. Trent is a widow with a young son. Lauren was in an abusive relationship so has issues also. They both over react at times and struggle with their feelings and fears.

When offered a second chance, take it!

Past experiences and past relationships might determine how we view ourselves and others. Starting over to build a new life and self-image is often challenging. Despite good intentions, conflict can destroy a budding relationship or make it stronger. Johnson effectively combines these elements as she tells Lauren and Trent’s story. This page turner grips the reader’s heart as the characters struggle to move forward with their lives. After all, doesn’t everyone deserve a second chance?

    LOVED IT

Hunter going back to Hawthorn Harbor, still had on his uniform and now a cane. A face that learned not to show emotions, and now to figure out who he was. The welcome gift was a service dog, he didn’t want, but had to face facts. Another was going for therapy and seeing his ex wife, of seven days before annulment. That’s why he hasn’t been back, and now she is a nurseA boy eight years old calls her mom, and Alice now introducing him to his son..For her, it has been only her son, and work, now to share him with someone else, his father, who she still loved. With a tag on our heartstrings we read this tender story of second chance at love. They said they were too young the first time, It was a love that was still there almost nine years later. As for Westin, he called him Dad, he could have a dog, and they would be a family. Readers will love this story.

    Complications of life

Things happen, as they say, although some of the important things that happen in this story are never explained: Why did Hunter join the Marines? And why did he not make Alice part of that plan? And why did Alice annul the marriage so quickly? What were the thoughts and emotions behind those decisions? Still, it’s a good story about two no longer young people picking up the consequences of their decisions and getting on with life — together.

    2nd chance romance

Actually the 2 days he drives by. First time she is on side of road in labor and she delivers her daughter. 2nd time is almost 10 years later and she is now a flowers lady (including weddings, etc) and has a flat on side of the road. She is also now a widow. This is a clean and sweet romance (as promised) of 2nd chances. There’s a lovely wishing well element. There is a stepfather relationship element. There are misunderstandings and pride. Lots of pride. Gets in the way. But, it has a very romantic ending.

I loved these two so much I wanted to strangle them

I loved these two so much I wanted to strangle them. Dave’s had a secret, long-standing crush on Brooklynn that she’d never guessed. Since her husband’s death, Brooklynn has been afraid of the ocean. It’s an irrational fear, but it’s also a little bit understandable because it was that same ocean that took her husband from her. Dave’s job as a Captain in the Coast Guard triggers all her fears. I’m so proud to see that she reaches out for help, but it was still frustrating to watch as this pair torpedoed their relationship time and time again. I thought there are strong similarities between this book and that of Adam and Janey.I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author.

They show faith & maturity while dealing with the curves that life throws us all.

Ryker had a job that he had loved for years but was so familiar that he was getting bored, say nothing about the discomfort of facing the elements on cold days. He was ready for a change in his life…for some permanancy.Brooklyn, on the other hand, still had not healed from the death of her first husband. The circumstances of his death had left her with irrational fears. How did she conquer them?I loved the setting and the peek into life in the Coast Guard. High on my list was the faith & maturity they showed while dealing with the curves that life throws at us. Real life issues aren’t settled with just a change of mind-set, it is a healing process and Elana gives us more than just a surface look at the process of healing and all of the other hits that come along with it.

Never to work with children or animals

This pair was absolutely crazy-making to me. I loved Trent and Lauren, but some of the hair-trigger reactions taking them back to bad places in previous relationships made this a rough read at times. this book was a bit of an emotional roller-coaster; zinging from sweetly silly moments to dark and painful ones before zooming back to hopeful once again. “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.” This proverb sums up the plot of this book. The question is how long between the hope and its fulfillment. Or, will the hope remain unfulfilled?Johnson honestly examines the emotions and challenges of being widowed with a baby and having to watch one’s son grow up without a father. Janie’s struggles to release her deceased husband and Adam’s long suffering love for her tug at the readers’ heart strings. You’ll find yourself hoping against hope that they can find their HEA together.

Adam, the Chief of Police has had a crush on Janey for a long, long time. But his best friend married her and was killed in a ferry accident early in their marriage. Janey and her son Jess have been on their own ever since. Adam has secretly watched over them all this time, but still wants a relationship with Janey. I love the story – especially the way Adam interacts with Jess.

    Building a future

Trent was a K-9 officer who lost his wife several years ago in a drunk driving accident. He has a 10 year old son Porter. All of the dates that he has recently been on were disasters. He contacts Lauren to give him an estimate on building a deck. She is very attractive. They start dating, but things go at a snails pace. She tells him she doesn’t like kids, but gets along fabulously with Porter. She also tells him that she was in a very abusive relationship. Trent sometimes acts very controlling with her and she does not put up with it. They have many ups and downs. What happens at Christmas?

His friends have been setting him up with dates, but they haven’t been very successful until he calls Lauren Michaels general contractor to build a deck on his home. Police officer Trent Baker, a widower with a young son, has been on a lot of dates with no potential. Lauren Michaels has spent as many years learning to be an independent woman and an independent contractor in Hawthorne Harbor. When they first meet, there is an instant attraction. She’s never met Porter, his son. As with any good story, Lauren learns to love both the father and the son, but Trent must deal with both loving Lauren and allowing someone else into his son’s life.As book #4 in the Hawthorne Harbor Second Chance Romance series familiar characters pop in and out, but the book can definitely be read as a stand-alone novel.

What a confusing mess we make of our lives…especially when we are young

What a confusing mess we make of our lives…especially when we are young. When we try to pick up the pieces of our lives & make sense out of them, it feels most overwhelming. Which pieces do we decide to forgive and move on & which pieces need to be talked out before going on from there? Do we really value these relationships enough? There are a lot of issues that Hunter & Alice need to resolve in their lives but they have the love between them & their love for Westin as incentive to do the hard work of making their relationship work rather than sweep it under the rug & walk away. This was a wonderful & heart-warming read—Well done Elana! Now I want to go back & read all of the stories that came before this one.I feel privileged to have received an ARC of this story and given the chance to give you my reaction to this book.

Can you truly still be in love with someone after she broke your heart twenty years ago?

I received a free copy and am voluntarily leaving a reviewThis is a story of two high school sweethearts that never really lost the love for each other. Jennie broke Bennett’s heart when she left right out of high school to follow her dreams of becoming an artist without a word. Bennett had a future in baseball but blew out his shoulder and lost his career. He had been married but when he lost his career his wife left him. He became a firefighter and does work working on the side. When Jennie comes back to town he realizes that he has always loved her and will do anything to get her back. Jennie feels like a failure because her fiancé didn’t show up for the wedding and she couldn’t go to work and see him every day so she moved back home. Will Bennett be able to convince her to give the a chance again? Will she realize the changes she has made in herself over the past twenty years was because her ex wanted her to and not because it was what she wanted? Will she think Bennett will try to change her too or will she realize that he loves her just the way she is? Will she realize she loves him before it is too late?

    Second chance

This is a second chance story between Hunter and Alice. They were young and in love, got married and he shipped off with the Marines. Alice got cold feet and got an annulment. 9 years later, Hunter has returned to Hawthorne Harbor, recovering from wounds received in attack and runs into Alice and surprise his 8 year old son. Can they work through the past issues in order to become a family? I liked how Hunter was able to bond with Weston immediately. Hunter and Alice kind of picked up where they left off – in love with each other but they have some trust issues. This is a good sweet read. I received an advanced copy but have bought a copy of my own.

One of Ms. Johnson’s best books

I think this is one of Ms. Johnson’s best books. The story broke my heart a little bit. So much pain for Hunter both physically and emotionally. He has to learn how to live with a disability that leaves him in constant pain. What a shock to come home after so long only to run into your ex and discover that you have a son you never knew about. And a shock to Alice to suddenly have to fess up on what she’d kept secret all that time. She couldn’t even give a good reason for it. She just did.Westin is a pretty great kid who takes everything in stride. No warning at all. “Westin, this is your dad”. Awesome! He loved everyone and everyone loved him.I liked that as Hunter and Alice work to put together a relationship they all learn forgiveness. The extended family too. One set of grandparents who have to step aside to allow Westin’s dad into his life and another set that never knew he existed all had to forgive as well. I was impressed with Alice’s mom being so supportive and looking at the positives as much as she could. And Alice had to adapt as well since she now had to share Westin with another person. Team parenting can be tough. The one thing that didn’t make sense to me was Alice annulling the marriage and then spending nine years hoping that Hunter would come back to her. Why would she think he would do that? She is the one that called everything off. Not him. Human foible that we are often irrational. And that hope was indeed irrational. Yet not unbelievable since she had never stopped loving him. I’d ask why she annulled the marriage so quickly in the first place but at her young age she would have been easily swayed by parents who were against the marriage to begin with. And Hunter was deployed so he wasn’t there to fight it.My only thing with the story is wondering why they would wait so long to get married the second time. I get waiting until they are sure to get engaged but once the decision was made why wait six months? They were no longer 19 year olds who didn’t know their minds. They already knew they wanted to be a family all under one roof. Just do it already. I know that is not typical in our society but I say get on with it. a sweet clean romance–kids included as well as dogs.

THE DAY HE DROVE BY / THE PARAMEDICS SECOND CHANCE is a standalone read with a happy ending. It is a very sweet clean romance, sex is not even talked about so it would be appropriate for any reading group. The heroine, Gretchen, is a widow with a young daughter. She owns and operates the florist shop in their small town. It is on the northwest corner of the U.S. where lavender is grown in abundance. The hero, Drew, is a local boy that has lived in the town for all of his life except for a few years when he lived in a local town. He left his home when the girl he fell in love with turned him down for marriage and left town. He was broken hearted and decided to start over in a nearby town. That didn’t work out so he moved home. He was very active in working jobs where he helped people. One day he delivered a baby on the side of the road in his home town. That was a big thing for him and 10 years later he is still telling the story. He currently works as an EMT but for their small town there are not many emergencies and his job is mostly simple events. He is unsettled. He lives with his two German Shepard dogs. On his way to work one day he spots a van on the side of the road with a flat tire. He stops to help and discovers it is the woman and child from 10 years ago. He never forgot her and is shocked to see her and her daughter after all this time. This story is their love story. She would be starting to love again and he would discover real love for the first time. Their path is not an easy one, she has a 10 year old daughter to consider. He has his own issues. There are a lot of side characters, 2 dogs and 2 kids as well as best friends. The heroine is a little over the top with her constant worrying about things and then not being mature enough to even discuss problems but apparently this doesn’t bother Drew and the romance proceeds. It is an interesting read and I definitely recommend it. It had everything requir4ed to make it a romance, falling in love, overcoming issues, the overwhelming ex-girlfriend and starting over in a whole new life. But everything works out and everyone gets a happy ending.I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am not a bot. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 9/30/18

The Day He Drove By – Hawthorne Harbor Romance Book #1

In the small town of Hawthorne Harbor Andrew Herrin a paramedic delivers Gretchen Samuel’s daughter on the roadside when she couldn’t make it to the hospital in time. Ten years later Gretchen is a widow raising her daughter Dixie when Drew sees Gretchen on the side of the road needing help for a flat tire. The only obstacle keeping Gretchen and Drew from falling in love is Drew’s ex-girlfriend. I really enjoyed reading this sweet contemporary Christian romance novel.

I love the characters Elana creates!Although some of their off-the-cuff reactions seemed to come from nowhere to the other character, we readers knew enough of their background to have and understanding for what prompted those reactions. They both had things to unlearn from their previous relationships. Luckily they were both understanding and forgiving… eventually.I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

This is one of my favorite genres of books to read. The author told a great story and I love her writing style. It was a good clean book. No sex or swear words, just a beautiful romance unfolding. I liked Alice and Hunters characters and read this book in one setting. I loved the fact that Alice knew what she wanted immediately. Some small concern I had about the book was how Hunter found out about Westin, but after I thought about it, it was as good as any surprise announcement. Also, I couldn’t figure out Hunters driving situation after he got better and had a good leg to work with. I loved the name that Alice gave their son, it shows where her heart is.

Part of a series, but stands alone

I had a free copy of this book, but this is my honest and voluntary opinion. Bennett Patterson, divorced and a firefighter who likes to do woodworking is content with his life until he goes to a fire and sees his high school girlfriend, Jennie Zimmerman who has returned to town. She’s an artist and was badly hurt when her fiancé left her at the altar. The plot of this book features two people who have been hurt by love and the different ways they cope with it and move on with their lives. A great tenderhearted book worth the read.
