The Island House is a fun and easy read with a charming setting and likable characters. While it may not be the most gripping romance novel, it’s a good choice for a lazy day at the beach.

  2. Judith Seale

I enjoyed reading this book as much as I enjoy reading all of Elana’s books. The story in each book is very interesting and inspiring. You must add Elana to your library.

A past heartbreak. An inability to trust. Loneliness. Wanting more from life. These threads run through Shannon and Jeremiah’s story. An inspiring novel that encourages them—and the reader—to figure out what you want in life and pursue it! Don’t allow past disappointments or fears to derail your dreams. Go for it!

  7. Diane

I loved Shannon and Jeremiah’s sweet story! Both have things in their past that they have worked really hard to overcome. But a new relationship brings up old fears and they both have to work through those. Hercules the therapy dog is a great added touch! Another hit by Elana Johnson.

  8. Norm Mitchell

The next day she inter vi ews for a job with a wed ding com pany, then buys sup plies for reno va ting and for liv ing.

  9. J G

This was such a delightful tale. The charming page-turning plot was filled with overcoming heartache and wrongdoing, a bit of hilarity, and finding love. Moreover, Charlotte (a wedding planner) and Dawson (a pilot), the protagonists were made for each other and gushed with chemistry. Furthermore, I loved the vivid details the author provided, especially the figurative language such as, “His nerves rattled away like ice cubes in a glass.” All in all, I enjoyed reading the captivating narrative.

A wonderful clean romance. The fact that it was in Hawaii made it even more special for me. I love it there. Honeymoon ed there and have been back several times.

This book has enough twists and turns to keep it interesting. It’s always fun n to read stories about people finding themselves as they start fresh.

In the beginning Shannon made it sound like Richard was her boss that had attacked her. But Shannon’s mom made it sound like they were a couple. The whole story confused me.

  14. MaryEllen

Well done characters, good story. Just enough “will they/won’t they” to make the story interesting.Ms. Johnson gives just enough description for the reader to visualize the scene, but not enough to bog down the pacing of the story. Could not have been better!

Shannon and Jeremiah both have scars, ones that need heeling before they can move forward in a relationship. This is another sweet beach read about people who are successful in their careers but stuck in their social life. Once you take a leap you have to be open to someone else and the baggage they bring into a relationship, but sometimes you have to know yourself well enough first. I loved the use of the therapy dog in this book and thought it was a good if not great representation of how it all works. Sweet read, highly recommend it.

Loved this book. It was a great beach read. Couldn’t put it down. Can’t wait to read the next one!

Perhaps a bit of advice. Find other ways to ask what’s going on. I don’t like telling people everything, either.I liked how Shannon found a way yo get out and say ‘I love you’ and a way to help others.

  21. louise

This was a good story. The constant repeating of the ridiculous name of the wedding planning business was quite annoying. I’m glad this story is over.

  22. Sandy H

I had a free copy of this book, but this is my honest and voluntary opinion. Shannon Bell works for a wedding planning service and gets coffee every morning at the same shop. Jeremiah times his day to see Shannon at the coffee shop hoping for a chance to ask her out. When she has a flat tire, he takes her to work, and the opportunity arises. She hasn’t dated in a number of years because of a bad relationship. This heartwarming book’s plot includes working through difficulties, trust, and finding out how to be happy. A great read!

  23. Ria

Sweet clean romance. The main characters in this book were both likable and I cheered them on for success. Both of them give the appearance of being capable and strong but underneath they each are carrying baggage that makes them feel insecure. They have to learn to set aside the masks they wear so they can move on in life with healthy relationships.I loved the supportive family systems they each had as well as the supportive coworkers. And Herc the dog was a highlight in this story. Reading about him almost made me want to get a dog. But just almost. ha.Sex: references to a previous sexual assault from the abusive ex boyfriend. Not graphic.Language: noViolence: sexual assault occurred years before the book begins.

  24. DeMO

I enjoyed reading about Shannan & Jeremiah’s victory overcoming hurts. I love the use of a service dog to calm there fears.

  25. DGL

Johnson delivers another signature HEA. Jeremiah and Shannon have a few demons to tackle and thankfully they discover that they are better when they face together.

This is my first time reading Elana Johnson and I’m hooked. I could never be a writer, I’m just not good at putting my thoughts into words. So even if my words don’t convince you to read this book, you really should take a chance and read it. I promise you won’t be disappointed. I loved that I could read this in one sitting. It wasn’t so short that I felt like I was reading a shortened version of a really good book, but it wasn’t so long that it felt like everything was being over explained. This is a love story. It isn’t all sicky sweet nor is it all just about the bedroom. In fact the lack of sex is another thing I love about it. It’s refreshing to find an author that doesn’t rely on their characters sex life to sell a book. She wrote a really good and believable story. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

  32. CALLY1999

This book ( #4) is as wonderful, cute, and beachy-keen as the ones before it in the “Getaway Bay Romance” series. I enjoyed finding out more about “help” dogs (like Hercules) while I dug my feet into the sand, listened to the waves roll in, and felt the wind blow little drops of water on my face as I relaxed into this story. I thought Shannon and Jeremiah made a very relatable couple, with real issues they both needed to deal with and resolve. Just like in real life, not all were resolved but the couple was willing to be patient and adjust when needed because of their love for each other. Elana Johnson has never disappointed me with her story telling. She shows her own heart and humanity in her writing. I recommend this book and the others in this wonderful beachy-keen series.

  33. Avid Reader

It was a good clean romance story. No sex or swear words. I enjoyed the book. It held my interest. There were a few typos but it didn’t distract from the story. I got a little irritated with Shannon with her feelings running hot and cold just because her “ex tried something” . Get a grip. That’s called LIFE 101. You just say ‘NO’ and move on. Jeremiah was sweet and I really liked his character. He just had one ‘jerk’ moment with his thinking. I would recommend to all ages.

  36. Pam

My friend, who enjoys contemporary romance, called this a squeaky clean romance. Yes it is but it’s a quick and quirky romance too. Both Charlotte and Dawson are damaged in the relationship department and both are estranged from family. Charlotte buys a fixer upper, as far away as she can go, after her divorce on an island that soothes her. She also gets a job with a wedding event planner, the best on the island. Her past job experiences are good for both the house and getting brides down the aisle. Dawson is a helicopter pilot with past experience in the Air Force. He’s a tour pilot for the island. When he’s up there, he doesn’t have to think of his bad romance. What happens when Charlotte finds Dawson squatting in her new home? It’s interesting to say the least. I enjoyed it but didn’t like the family and friend dynamics. Some romances are humorous and quick (too quick for real life, I think). This may be one of them, still, it’s a fun read.

This story is about a woman who is newly divorced that relocated to Hawaii and buys a fixer upper. She is dealing with a lot of baggage and refurbishing a house and starting a new job. She has a lot on her plate. She meets a man in her new house the day she moves in. There is an immediate attraction. He wants to date but she can’t bring herself to consider dating right now.Despite not wanting to date she does spend time with him. Will she allow herself to feel again. Good clean quick read.

  39. Barbara W

A past abusive relationship stains the future and causes serious trust issues with future relationships. I love this story and the way that Shannon and Jeremiah overcome these problems.

  40. Brandon Mendez

The Island House was a fun and light-hearted romance novel with charming characters and a beautiful setting. Perfect for a day at the beach or a cozy weekend read

  41. Debbiew

Shannon and Jeremiah both had broken hearts from past relationships and are wary of commitment.Although they have worked close to each other for years they only had seen each other at the coffee shop until fate steps in with her flat tire. This is where all the complicated twists start and will keep you turning the pages to see what happens next.

  42. Kindle Customer

Walking a road of healing and learning to trust is very difficult after any type of abuse or assault. Learning to love is an even more difficult one. I related to the main female character and her difficulties and truly loved how the main male character interacted with her and was truly a God-send in his ability to exhibit such patience and peace. Loved reading this book!!!

  45. Susan L Shearer

Elana Johnson gives us a love story that is both complicated and heartwarming in The Helicopter’s Pilot Bride. When two people end in an unusual situation and find the attraction between them, they have to decide how to proceed.Charlotte bought a house unseen when her husband wants a divorce and marries as soon as the divorce is final. Arriving she finds Dawson under the sink working on a leaky sink and on scaring him with them both becoming wet. After the divorce Charlotte had a damaged heart and was leery of men but the attraction was to strong to ignore. What was she to do?Dawson was stuck in the past that kept him from wanting a relationship until he met Charlotte. Now he had to decide what was important and how to deal with it.Can together these two broken people heal each other and move on?

  46. Luv2read

I was actually bored with this story. I ended up skimming from the middle to the end of the book. Shannon annoyed me with how hot and cold she was. Jerimiah had the patience of a saint. I didn’t like that I didn’t see/feel them fall in love. After their second breakup? she realizes she love him?

  47. Linda Rainey

Shannon and Jeremiah must overcome obstacles to get a second chance at love.I loved the beach romance with an interesting cast of characters. This book is recommended for those who love sweet romance.

  54. atvtnv- mom of many

Jeremiah and Shannon are practically neighbors and have wanted to meet each other for a while and it’s fun when they finally do. However they both have a lot of issues, real ones that need healing, and jobs and family stuff as well. Will they be able to make a relationship work? Clean romance. Great chemistry. Great therapy dog. Assault mentioned and referenced. Great addition to the series

  55. W Bishop

This was an easy and enjoyable read. I really liked the character of Dr. Yeates. He was a kind, considerate and patient man. Shannon had a lot to work through to be able to commit to a relationship. I liked her too in how she was able to identify and work through her issues. It was a sweet romance.

  56. Kindle Customer

Shannon has worked at Your Tidal Forever for five years. She knows how to organize and pull together every aspect for a wedding. She also Luke’s her coffee. So much so she has it timed to show up there every morning when it isn’t terribly busy.Jeremiah is a child psychologist. He’s been working up the nerve to ask Shannon out for a year now. When she ends up with a flat tire, the doctor becomes her white knight. After her tumultuous past, Shannon questions everything the doc says. She constantly feels like he’s trying to counsel her. With her past can he get her to move on and give their relationship a chance?~

  57. Shadowell

I found this to be a very moving story. And as all of her books I have read it was very enjoyable and fun to read.

  58. Book Addict

This is a clean romance between two people with family baggage. Though Dawson falls for Charlotte fairly quickly, I would still say this is a slow burn romance. I think it takes place over a period of several months, although it didn’t specify exactly. Chalotte has some recent issues she is running from, and fortunately we get to witness her growth as she deals with them. Dawson has some older issues that he finally tackles as well. Charlotte is a very driven, type A character, and she lights a fire under him. She unknowingly pulls him out of his funk, and he slowly does the same for her. There is a little angst, but not too much. The story ends at 92%, and it is followed by a teaser for another story. The teaser needs serious editing, as there are multiple mistakes in it. I’m rating this book 3.5 stars, because the original story isn’t bad, but I don’t plan on reading the next book based on the blurb. I didn’t read the sneak peak, because I couldn’t get past the blurb, so that is something the author might want to fix.

  59. Audrey Godfrey

The Island House is a light and enjoyable romance novel that is perfect for a relaxing day at the beach. While the plot is somewhat predictable, the charming characters and beautiful setting make it worth the read

  60. Momma D

Quick, fun read! I didn’t want to put it down. Also makes me want to travel to Hawaii for a beach wedding!

  61. Diana

Sweet Romance will ups and downs, starting with a flat tire.

  62. Karla B.

As sweet, clean and charming as this story was, I was put off by poor lack of proofing. For examples: verb tenses (eg. “would have wore”), author’s confusion of the characters at times (eg. “Charlotte said…as she looked at Charlotte,”) and repetitive parts of the story (eg. Charlotte had already told Dawson about her husband’s leaving her for another woman, yet he was surprised when she told him again later in the book). Karla B.

Short, sweet and a good read. Well edited and of course an HEA. Definitely worth the time to read as it was actually hard to put down for long.

  68. mmmurdoog

A good, mid-life romance. Charlotte Madsen fled her former home to live in Getaway Bay after her divorce. Dawson Dane has been a wanderer, first due to his career in the Air Force and then because of the habits he built during that time. Their meeting was especially inauspicious: a plumbing problem in her new home where he has been squatting. The story has a few bumps along the way: common in stories of this nature. Neither’s heart is healthy and whole. Both have had issues with their families as well. Both need time to heal. All-in-all a remarkably well-thought-out story.

  69. Kindle Customer

Another great book in this fun series. Great characters who are learning to live and love all over again. .

  72. Denise Arnold

This romance novel offers a picturesque setting and a heartwarming love story. The characters are charming and relatable, making it an enjoyable read. Perfect for a cozy weekend getaway.

  73. Bookloving Gal

This is the story of a broken hearted divorcée and a disappointed bachelor with a bit of grey at the temples. Both are estranged from their families. True love is a hardy character, and it eventually puts everything right. For me, the end dragged on too long because we have to spend a chapter finding out the potential bride will be able to have children, despite her not ever falling pregnant in the seven years of her first marriage. For readers of sweet romance, this is a nice read. For me personally, I would have enjoyed more external conflict.

  74. E Jay

I especially enjoyed the realistic concerns and resulting behaviors that made me wonder whether this relationship would ultimately succeed. Two successful people have to decide if they have time for a real relationship, our will their work come first?

What is a better place to find than Getaway Island in Hawaii? Read this amazing story to find that answer. You will love the characters and beauty.

  77. Kristen Lewendon

This was such a sweet story about starting over when the life you knew is no longer yours. Both Charlotte and Dawson have been badly burned by past relationships and neither is looking for something new right now. But a chance meeting in Charlotte’s new home opens up possibilities they weren’t expecting. I really enjoyed watching this pair as they healed from those old open wounds and learned to trust one another and themselves. Remember, no matter where you go, there you are. You may be able to run from your life and problems for a time, but you can’t hide from yourself forever.

For me, how ever, the loca tion was diffi cult to visua lize. “Geta way Bay” does not sound like the name of a place that would be in Hawaii.

I loved the use of the therapy dog in this book and thought it was a good if not great representation of how it all works. Sweet read, highly recommend it.

Great book for the most part. I enjoyed all of the characters. For me, however, the location was difficult to visualize. “Getaway Bay” does not sound like the name of a place that would be in Hawaii. Having been to Hawaii numerous times, the descriptions of the area did not resonate as tropical or lava-covered or anything like we have seen on the Big Island. Also, I do not recall ever seeing a trailer park in Hawaii.

I love how Elana Johnson incorporates hard issues into her books. Physical and emotional abuse are real and this book gives insight into what people have to deal with in healing. Love the raw feelings in both sides but Shannon and Jeremiah found a way to hang on. Elana is one of my favorite authors!

This story gets to the heart of what it means to have your whole life turned upside down. Charlotte finds herself divorced and deserted by her friends. So she moves across the world to Hawaii to form a new life. Dawson was in Hawaii making a new life for himself after being thrown over by his fiancé who quickly moves on to his brother. Neither of them thought that they would ever be able to recover from their past.I really enjoyed this story watching them deal with their pasts and decide if they have a future together or not.

THE ISLAND HOUSE is a standalone story with a happy ending. There are no sexy scenes or inappropriate language. It is set in Hawaii and you can almost hear the waves hitting the shore or the sounds of helicopter blades. This is a great story of betrayal, disappointment, family, and finding ones self only to discover you have found someone else as well.Charlotte arrived on the island only to discover a man under her sink. This moment will transform her life for the better. She is fleeing South Carolina. Her husband of 11 years tells her he wants a divorce and is then married 11 days after the divorce is final. She is crushed. Charlotte knew her life was not where she wanted to be. She had a very busy glamours life. Her husband was a real estate on Carter’ Cove where they live a very social life. They both worked, he was a very big real estate agent on the cove and she was an event planner. They worked hard and then partied all week-end. She was not real happy but she thought they were ok.So, as soon as she could sell her house, finish up at work, pack and sell everything else, she left for Hawaii not telling anyone where she was going. All their friends sided with her ex and he was seen everywhere with his new wife. So she bought her house unseen and had plans to fix it up if it needed it. Finding a man under her sink just let her know how much she needed to do.Dawson is a retired Air Force pilot living the easy life of the beach. He has always flown solo and likes it that way. Until today. He had been living in the house of his friends and when not working he was trying to fix it up a bit. He never knew it sold. He really had no place else to go so he begged her to let him stay for a couple of weeks until he could find something else. She agreed and he agreed to help her with free labor and muscle when he was not flying tours around the island. He was very attracted to her but he could tell something was off. This is a great story of learning to let go and move on. To love again and forgive. It is just a great story and I really enjoyed it. I definitely recommend it. A great read.I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 2/22/2021

I had a feeling at the beginning of this story that true love was going to prevail. It was definitely not easy. Charlotte and Dawson both had baggage, and their relationship was frequently difficult. The story about their past and their careers helped everything make sense. People in their lives, both in the past and the present, made everything seem very real. In the end there were many things to celebrate, including friends and family, but most importantly the happy couple.

To begin with…I really really enjoyed this story.Fresh from a devastating divorce, Charlotte leaves all she knows for a beat up little house in Hawaii. Upon arrival she discovers Dawsen, basically squatting there. Both have serious family and love baggage, but together they blossom. The book shifts back and forth from Dawsen to Charlotte, digging deep into their feelings, without getting mushy and stupid. A HEA entails after some stuff ‘goes down’.I do wish more would have been discussed about her sister Wilma and why they don’t get along. I have a feeling her character would have added some nasty snark and perspective on her character. And Dawsen’s brother…a discussion was needed there.I also would have LOVED to see Hunter discover he couldnt break Charlotte no matter how dispicable he was.All that being said…I did love the book.

Shannon and Jeremiah are a difficult pair to read. They’ve both got some pretty extensive traumas in their pasts that affect the way they interact with other people, especially in a romantic relationship. I loved that most of the time, these two were very careful with one another’s feelings. Because it’s a complete mess when they aren’t being quite so considerate. I adored Jeremiah. My heart broke for him every time he wasn’t feeling his best self. I know I should have had the same feelings even more intensely for Shannon, but somehow, I felt blocked from her. And when everything goes sideways, she’s not the character who has my full sympathy. I have to say, I really appreciated that this book spotlights the value of therapy (and therapy animals) for good mental health.I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author.

The idea for the story is solid, however some elements don’t work. The setting and what they’re describing does not seem to mesh with Hawaii, where this is supposedly to taking place. Although the characters are adequate, they could be better. I have a problem with the editing and grammar in this book since there are just too many errors to overlook.

    Loved this novel!

    Touching story of healing hearts

As sweet, clean and charming as this story was, I was put off by poor lack of proofing. For examples: verb tenses (eg. “would have wore”), author’s confusion of the characters at times (eg. “Charlotte said…as she looked at Charlotte,”) and repetitive parts of the story (eg. Charlotte had already told Dawson about her husband’s leaving her for another woman, yet he was surprised when she told him again later in the book). Karla B.

Love at first sight between Charlotte and Dawson or not… who wouldn’t want to find a handsome man under the sink of their new house?? A good, mid-life romance. Charlotte Madsen fled her former home to live in Getaway Bay after her divorce. Dawson Dane has been a wanderer, first due to his career in the Air Force and then because of the habits he built during that time. Their meeting was especially inauspicious: a plumbing problem in her new home where he has been squatting. The story has a few bumps along the way: common in stories of this nature. Neither’s heart is healthy and whole. Both have had issues with their families as well. Both need time to heal. All-in-all a remarkably well-thought-out story.

    Clean Romance

    Good Clean Love Story

This story was clean and a fun read. This is one of those story that is realistic. What happen in this story could have happen to anyone. But, all is well. The author identifies the problem and allows the couple to work it out. I really liked the way they discovered each other and love. I like this author; she writes leaving nothing out.

    Love is Patient

Great story of the complications of falling in love. She has just been hurt in the worst way by her husband and responds by running as far away as she can. She hopes to heal but does not want to be near another man any time soon. But fate has other plans! A great romantic story!

    best friends to more

Beautiful island beach story. Burke’s family flower farm raised flowers for the whole island and beyond. His dad wanted to retire and told Burke he needed a fiancé so he could pass the business on. He asked Ash his running partner/friend to be is fake girlfriend but it definitely didn’t feel fake. Could his heart be whole again after his last girlfriend ripped it out. Ash had crushed on him forever but couldn’t believe his feelings were real and not just a means to an end-his flower farm.

Great story of finding love and healing

Charlotte is a woman that has been run through re meat grinder of life. After eleven years of marriage her husband tells her he wants a divorce and that he had found someone else he was in love with. Just less the two weeks after the divorce is final her marries the other woman. To pour salt in her sounds all of her friends sided with her ex husband. Some even asking her what she did to drive him away. Even her sister turned against her. Not being able to deal with the betrayal and loneliness any longer she sold her home and moved across the country and ocean to one of the Hawaiian island buying a fixed upper house online. She didn’t tell anyone she was leaving or where she was going. She was starting over.Dawson is staying at his friends house; which they had given him an open invitation to use at any time. They just forgot to tell him when he needed a place to stay that together put the house up for sale. This is how Charlotte and Dawson met. As he was doing a terrible job of trying to fix the sink.I have to say that I wish that there were real men out in the world that are like Dawson. His patients and help and helping her heal through all that she went through. It is a great story there is a time that there is a chance that they won’t make it. I loved this story.

    Great charac ters

For me, how ever, the loca tion was diffi cult to visua lize. “Geta way Bay” does not sound like the name of a place that would be in Hawaii.

    Great characters and wholesome romance

Great book for the most part. I enjoyed all of the characters. For me, however, the location was difficult to visualize. “Getaway Bay” does not sound like the name of a place that would be in Hawaii. Having been to Hawaii numerous times, the descriptions of the area did not resonate as tropical or lava-covered or anything like we have seen on the Big Island. Also, I do not recall ever seeing a trailer park in Hawaii.

    Lovely Hawaii

This is a pleasant romance set in beautiful Hawaii; A great escape read. This is short, more of a short story or novella and TBE characters and story could have been more developed; however I spent a couple of enjoyable hours escaping to Hawaii.

    Sweet read

Loved it because it was more true to life. She really showed the struggles and sometimes pain of lost loves and how you have to heal and get your heart and mind together before you move on and into the love for a lifetime.

Mature woman dealing with real life issues.

What I liked was that Charlotte was multi talented. Her character had more than one focus. She held a full time job while remodeling her home , and coping with her divorce issues. The setting was realistic and I identified many scenes portrayed from my time in the islands. All around good read, excepting occasional descriptive words used incorrectly.

Your best friend asks you to be his fake girlfriend do you say yes?

I received a free copy and am voluntarily leaving a reviewAshley and Burke have been best friends for many years. Ashley has had a crush on Burke for a while. Burke has a reputation around the island as being a partier but Ashley is the only one who knows the truth that he is the exact opposite. When he is confronted by his dad about settling down before he can inherit the family company, Burke has to come up with a plan. What do you do when your best friend asks you to be his fake girlfriend and help him figure out a way to find a real one at the same time? Of course you agree and hope you can put enough barriers around your heart to keep from getting hurt again. What do you do when your heart gets involved anyway and he says he has feelings for you too but then you overhear him tell his parents that he may never want to get married? You run. When you finally talk to him you tell him he needs to figure things out and get over his ex (from six years ago). Will Burke figure things out before Ashley finds someone else? Will Ashley be able to forgive him when he finally does get things figures out? Will they still remain best friends?
