Charlotte Madsen’s whole world came crashing down six months ago with the words, “I met someone else.”

Thirty-seven, recently divorced, and childless. That’s Charlotte when she disembarks from the plane in Getaway Bay. She wants to get away, that’s for sure. She thought the best way to do that was to buy a run-down house overlooking the bay, knowing she’ll need all her fixer-upper skills to get it in shape. Which is just fine. She’s hoping as she overhauls the house, she’ll get a life makeover too.

She was not expecting a tall, handsome man to be under the kitchen sink when she arrives at the supposedly abandoned house. She wasn’t expecting to get drenched when the non-plumber twists something the wrong way. And she certainly wasn’t expecting her heart to be well enough to feel anything for anyone.

But former Air Force pilot, Dawson Dane, has a charming devil-may-care personality, and Charlotte could use some carefree laughter in her life. But everything with Dawson isn’t sunshine and unicorns. He’s estranged from his family, though he does speak to one of his brothers. And he’s never committed to anything except his career, even choosing flying over an engagement years ago.

Can Charlotte navigate the healing process as she renovates the island house? Can Dawson finally make a commitment to a woman? Or will he and Charlotte decide a relationship is just too hard?

Charlotte moves to Getaway Bay to get away from her old life after the divorce. When Charlotte gets to her new house she has a surprise guest waiting for her. Dawson is squatting in Charlotte’s house not realizing it’s been sold. Charlotte is nice and lets Dawson stay as long as he will help her. Dawson realizes that Charlotte is becoming someone special so he moves out and dates her properly. These two both have past issues to work through. Charlotte pushes Dawson away when she sees her ex and leaves town for a few days. They both realize that they have serious feelings for each other, but are unsure how to show the other. It was a really good book!

  7. Kristen Lewendon

This was such a sweet story about starting over when the life you knew is no longer yours. Both Charlotte and Dawson have been badly burned by past relationships and neither is looking for something new right now. But a chance meeting in Charlotte’s new home opens up possibilities they weren’t expecting. I really enjoyed watching this pair as they healed from those old open wounds and learned to trust one another and themselves. Remember, no matter where you go, there you are. You may be able to run from your life and problems for a time, but you can’t hide from yourself forever.

Another wonderful book by Johnson. Charlotte and Dawson become so real that you find yourself routing for them in spite of all of the drama. For some reason this will not allow me to type the authors first name.

  13. CALLY1999

I really enjoyed this story about Charlotte and Dawson. It was a change from the cowboy western love stories Elana usually writes but was very realistic…. and who wouldn’t want to live in Hawaii and have a beautiful bay and water right outside your door??? I’ve never been disappointed in any of her stories and this one was wonderful. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the “Getaway Bay Resort” series. Hat’s Off to Elana. She writes with such a passionate heart.

THE ISLAND HOUSE is a standalone story with a happy ending. There are no sexy scenes or inappropriate language. It is set in Hawaii and you can almost hear the waves hitting the shore or the sounds of helicopter blades. This is a great story of betrayal, disappointment, family, and finding ones self only to discover you have found someone else as well.Charlotte arrived on the island only to discover a man under her sink. This moment will transform her life for the better. She is fleeing South Carolina. Her husband of 11 years tells her he wants a divorce and is then married 11 days after the divorce is final. She is crushed. Charlotte knew her life was not where she wanted to be. She had a very busy glamours life. Her husband was a real estate on Carter’ Cove where they live a very social life. They both worked, he was a very big real estate agent on the cove and she was an event planner. They worked hard and then partied all week-end. She was not real happy but she thought they were ok.So, as soon as she could sell her house, finish up at work, pack and sell everything else, she left for Hawaii not telling anyone where she was going. All their friends sided with her ex and he was seen everywhere with his new wife. So she bought her house unseen and had plans to fix it up if it needed it. Finding a man under her sink just let her know how much she needed to do.Dawson is a retired Air Force pilot living the easy life of the beach. He has always flown solo and likes it that way. Until today. He had been living in the house of his friends and when not working he was trying to fix it up a bit. He never knew it sold. He really had no place else to go so he begged her to let him stay for a couple of weeks until he could find something else. She agreed and he agreed to help her with free labor and muscle when he was not flying tours around the island. He was very attracted to her but he could tell something was off. This is a great story of learning to let go and move on. To love again and forgive. It is just a great story and I really enjoyed it. I definitely recommend it. A great read.I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 2/22/2021

Charlotte was running away from devastating divorce. A continent and an ocean away in a house she’d bought sight unseen, she found a man’s legs sticking out from under her kitchen sink, followed by being soaked by spraying water from the pipe he had loosened. He was well muscled, handsome and most unwanted. The tension, the ups and downs, the running away, were all well written and kept me turning pages even though I knew I’d find a happy ending. I enjoyed the rollercoaster along the way. A goodread and I’m opening the next story in this series as soon as I finish writing this.

  16. Char R

A pretty apt title for a series. It was a heartwarming, love conquers all type of story…with a few segues. Both lead characters were believable and worth the effort to go on.

  17. Teresa

I loved this romance by Elana Johnson. Charlotte and Dawson are so cute. I love that they both went home when they separated. I also love that Charlotte got the guy even though he had gone out with her sister.

  18. Mickey J.

Charolet experience the most dramatic time of her life. Her husband telling her he no longer loved her, but loved another woman. She moved and started a new life. Dawson’s only love was flying, that is until he met Charolet. Are either ready to fall in love? Read and find out!

  19. J Marion

Charlotte has recently divorced. She moves to Getaway Bay to get away from her husband who cheated on her & her friends who betrayed her. She has purchased a house on the bay. She plans to fix it up. When she wakes through the door a man is working on the kitchen sink.Dawson has been staying at the house. He helps her do some of the repairs.Sweet story of healing for Charlotte & Dawson.

  20. Mary Miller

This was a very good contemporary romance on a Hawaiian island. She moved to a broken down home she had never seen before to start a new life. He had been squating in her home when she arrived. After many trying times they finally got together. Great read!

To begin with…I really really enjoyed this story.Fresh from a devastating divorce, Charlotte leaves all she knows for a beat up little house in Hawaii. Upon arrival she discovers Dawsen, basically squatting there. Both have serious family and love baggage, but together they blossom. The book shifts back and forth from Dawsen to Charlotte, digging deep into their feelings, without getting mushy and stupid. A HEA entails after some stuff ‘goes down’.I do wish more would have been discussed about her sister Wilma and why they don’t get along. I have a feeling her character would have added some nasty snark and perspective on her character. And Dawsen’s brother…a discussion was needed there.I also would have LOVED to see Hunter discover he couldnt break Charlotte no matter how dispicable he was.All that being said…I did love the book.

  22. Jill

What is a better place to find than Getaway Island in Hawaii? Read this amazing story to find that answer. You will love the characters and beauty.

  23. J G

This was such a delightful tale. The charming page-turning plot was filled with overcoming heartache and wrongdoing, a bit of hilarity, and finding love. Moreover, Charlotte (a wedding planner) and Dawson (a pilot), the protagonists were made for each other and gushed with chemistry. Furthermore, I loved the vivid details the author provided, especially the figurative language such as, “His nerves rattled away like ice cubes in a glass.” All in all, I enjoyed reading the captivating narrative.

Great story of the complications of falling in love. She has just been hurt in the worst way by her husband and responds by running as far away as she can. She hopes to heal but does not want to be near another man any time soon. But fate has other plans! A great romantic story!

  26. Momma D

Quick, fun read! I didn’t want to put it down. Also makes me want to travel to Hawaii for a beach wedding!

  27. Sue

This was a pleasant cozy, romantic story. If you like smut, this isn’t for you. If you like a clean romance, it is.

Charlotte is a woman that has been run through re meat grinder of life. After eleven years of marriage her husband tells her he wants a divorce and that he had found someone else he was in love with. Just less the two weeks after the divorce is final her marries the other woman. To pour salt in her sounds all of her friends sided with her ex husband. Some even asking her what she did to drive him away. Even her sister turned against her. Not being able to deal with the betrayal and loneliness any longer she sold her home and moved across the country and ocean to one of the Hawaiian island buying a fixed upper house online. She didn’t tell anyone she was leaving or where she was going. She was starting over.Dawson is staying at his friends house; which they had given him an open invitation to use at any time. They just forgot to tell him when he needed a place to stay that together put the house up for sale. This is how Charlotte and Dawson met. As he was doing a terrible job of trying to fix the sink.I have to say that I wish that there were real men out in the world that are like Dawson. His patients and help and helping her heal through all that she went through. It is a great story there is a time that there is a chance that they won’t make it. I loved this story.

Very captivating. The range of thoughts and emotions are so real and appropriate. It made the reader feel them along with the characters.

  31. Kathy Terry

For me, how ever, the loca tion was diffi cult to visua lize. “Geta way Bay” does not sound like the name of a place that would be in Hawaii.

  32. Marlou

Charlotte has been thru a divorce and has sold her house and moved to Hawaii and buys there. She met him when he was trying to fix a sink. He is a helicopter tour guide. Love grows between them and has turned to marriage.I highly recommend this well written story of love which i really enjoyed and i am sure you could too.

  33. Jan Niblock

This story gets to the heart of what it means to have your whole life turned upside down. Charlotte finds herself divorced and deserted by her friends. So she moves across the world to Hawaii to form a new life. Dawson was in Hawaii making a new life for himself after being thrown over by his fiancé who quickly moves on to his brother. Neither of them thought that they would ever be able to recover from their past.I really enjoyed this story watching them deal with their pasts and decide if they have a future together or not.

This story was clean and a fun read. This is one of those story that is realistic. What happen in this story could have happen to anyone. But, all is well. The author identifies the problem and allows the couple to work it out. I really liked the way they discovered each other and love. I like this author; she writes leaving nothing out.

When Charlotte ‘s husband said he wanted a divorce because he met someone else Charlotte finished her jobs , sold her house and moved from South Carolina to Hawaii. Her husband remarried seven days after the divorce was final. She bought a fixer upper house so she could fix it up like she wanted. Upon arriving at the house she found Dawson under her kitchen sink trying to fix it. He hadn’t shut off the water valve and wound up spraying Charlotte and the kitchen with water. My first book by this author. It’s been a very long time since I read a romance story, but this one seemed to have all the necessary parts…a good storyline, interesting characters, beautiful setting. I really enjoyed it!!

  51. Kindle Customer

I had a feeling at the beginning of this story that true love was going to prevail. It was definitely not easy. Charlotte and Dawson both had baggage, and their relationship was frequently difficult. The story about their past and their careers helped everything make sense. People in their lives, both in the past and the present, made everything seem very real. In the end there were many things to celebrate, including friends and family, but most importantly the happy couple.

  52. Tracey Evans

This is my first time reading Elana Johnson and I’m hooked. I could never be a writer, I’m just not good at putting my thoughts into words. So even if my words don’t convince you to read this book, you really should take a chance and read it. I promise you won’t be disappointed. I loved that I could read this in one sitting. It wasn’t so short that I felt like I was reading a shortened version of a really good book, but it wasn’t so long that it felt like everything was being over explained. This is a love story. It isn’t all sicky sweet nor is it all just about the bedroom. In fact the lack of sex is another thing I love about it. It’s refreshing to find an author that doesn’t rely on their characters sex life to sell a book. She wrote a really good and believable story. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

  53. Kindle Customer JB

Charlotte had been destroyed and deceived by not only her husband but her so called friends, newly divorced she packed several bags and moved several thousand miles away to start a new life. Dawson had been temporarily living in her new run down shack of a home until he found something new! And a new friendship is formed!

  54. The Voracious Reader

I didn’t like this novel very much in the beginning. It had too many awkward sentences that I had to stop and read again and again to try to figure out what they meant. But this cleared up after a couple of chapters. The longer I read, the better the story got. It had a few grammatical errors but turned out to be an enjoyable read. I gave it 4.5 stars, which rounded up to a five.

  55. Mary Miller

Upon arrival she is met by former Air Force pilot Dawson Dane who has been living in the house she bought. He agrees to help her fix up the house, but ends up moving out when he starts to fall for her. The plot involves issues of trust, self-esteem, and family estrangements. An uplifting story for this first book in the series.

The “meeting” was so funny I laughed out loud. Their personalities blended so well, I was drawn into the story very easily. Each character had their struggles to get through, before really opening their hearts and I liked how the author wrote about their internal challenges with enough truth to make it believable, but not really dwelling on how devastating those experiences can be in real life. Similar to the superhero movies, Elena Johnson gives enough challenge to make it feel “real” but still create a happy ending. Island House is a fun story!! I’m glad I read it.

  78. Ann Herndon

This is a really good book, one you can sink your teeth into and cheer for the characters. I highly recommend reading it.
